ABOUT CORNWALL GRAVEL CO. LTD

CELEBRATING OVER 60 YEARS

Cornwall Gravel Co. Ltd. and Grant Ready Mix Ltd. continue to upgrade and expand to meet the changing demands of today’s competitive construction industry. The Late Ivan Grant had a dream in 1949 to start a construction company. He built his own crusher which produced 400 tons capacity per day compared to today’s crusher at MacLeod Quarry, which produces more than 5,000 tons per day. In 1949, the company had three employees compared to today’s 200 employees. Ivan and Lionel have told many tales about the hardships of starting a construction company. This dedication has been passed on to his children and grandchildren

The Late, Lionel Grant joined his father Ivan in 1950. Lionel earned many awards in his lifetime. He was well known by the business community for helping start-up companies grow by sharing his business experiences and support. The late, Norvan Grant, Ivan’s second son joined the management team in 1966. A third generation of Grants, David, now President, joined in 1979, Cathy Grant, Secretary/Treasurer, joined in 1981 and Peter, Vice-President, joined in 1989. There is now a fourth generation, Jason Grant, graduate of Civil Engineering program and Crystal, a Professional Engineer.

Cornwall Gravel went into the asphalt business in 1964 and now operates two modern computerized plants. We have been in the asphalt business the longest of any Eastern Ontario company. A state of the art portable plant allows Cornwall Gravel to compete in a larger surrounding area. Our stationary plant in Cornwall had numerous upgrades completed to allow us to service many customers and crews simultaneously. The company has 3 Shuttle Buggies and heavy highway rollers to meet the changing needs of highway paving. Steve Ross, Asphalt Superintendent, who joined our company added strength and knowledge to the constantly changing asphalt market. We have built a 2,000 square foot Quality Control Laboratory and we are CCIL type A, B, C & D certified. We have all the latest technology for testing granular and concrete as well as creating and testing both Superpave and Marshall asphalt mixes.

We have computerized our entire operation from our ready mix plant, weigh scales in nine quarries, Applehill, Avonmore, Casselman, Chesterville, Cornwall, Kemtpville, Ottawa, Sarsfield and Iroquois. Our office computer is continually upgraded with the latest improvements, including job costing, equipment tracking, estimating, inventory, networking, electronic payroll and accounting.

We have 11 ready mix trucks and 1 stoneslinger. Grant Ready Mix covers areas within a 100 kilometer radius, including United States. We supply ready mix concrete year round. We have a fully computerized concrete plant capable of batching any type of concrete. We added a Chiller to our concrete plant to ensure our concrete is of the highest standard regardless of the ambient temperature. Our stoneslinger is capable of spreading stone around foundations or hard to reach places–eliminating much manual labour.

Maintaining a safe workplace is a great concern to our company. The work of our safety coordinators, Andre Forget and Carole Grant and WHMIS trained employees have resulted in safety awards being presented to our main quarry located on South Branch Rd., our portable crushing operation and our asphalt plants. We are proud winners of the Construction Safety Association and Ontario Road Builders’ annual Roulty Milestone Safety Award for reaching over 500,000 consecutive man-hours without lost-time injury. We have an annual Safety Award program where each employee receives a safety award for having an accident free year. The Construction Safety Association presents annual awards to our foreman and superintendents at a special banquet in their honor.

We are very proud of our employees’ length of service records with our company, with more than 35 employees having over 20 years of service. Each employee is recognized on their 5 year anniversary.
Our continuing concern with the environment has seen the installation of environmental protection devices in our main yard to control water run off quality and Blasting Monitoring devices at our quarries. A tree planting program was implemented over the past 15 years, planting more than 25,000 seedlings.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the people of Cornwall, Ottawa, Brockville and surrounding communities for their patronage. We look forward to continued participation in the development of these areas.
